Five old elements. One page a night.

Most nights before I sleep, I spend ten or fifteen minutes writing—just enough to sort through the day and name how it actually went. Was it easy? Tense? Was something bothering me that I hadn't admitted yet?

For years I worked an office job, and most days looked a lot like the one before. Then one night, writing down how the day had felt, I read back what I'd written and saw it plainly: I wanted to do something more creative, something that felt more alive. I made that decision on the page. Orileva is what came of it.

I built it around an idea I'd long found useful: Wu Xing, the Five Elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. For more than two thousand years, it has been a Chinese way of describing how things change and act on one another, and much as people around the world read the zodiac, many in China still turn to it to think about character, timing, and balance.

I believe it still has something to offer, not as a prediction but as a way of seeing. In a journal, the five elements become five questions you can bring to the page. The answers stay yours, and over time they add up to knowing yourself a little better.
